CfSC invites Finnish cycling expert to speak at its AGM

Winter cyclists in Finland (photo by Timo Perälä)On November 2, Citizens for Safe Cycling, Ottawa’s cycling advocacy group since 1984, has invited Timo Perälä to talk about winter cycling in Finland.

Timo lives in Finland on the Arctic Circle, in a town called Oulu, 600 km north of Helsinki. Over the years, Oulu has developed a culture of winter cycling. Oulu is now well known for its extensive cycling network and for the high number of cyclists during the winter.

Most people in Canada think that winter cycling is not possible. Jan Gehl, from Denmark, who was recently in Ottawa, argued that rather than focussing on what is not possible, Canadians should focus what ís actually possible to enjoy the winter sun as much as possible. Timo’s presentation will talk about the secrets of winter cycling in the city of Oulu and how to promote winter cycling.

Mr. Perälä is a keen winter cyclist himself and has done the only research in Finland about winter cycling.  He has given presentations on winter cycling in several countries and at seminars such as PIARC winter road congress in 2002 in Sapporo, Japan, and VeloCity 2004 in Paris.

When: November 2, 2010, 7 p.m.
Where: Tom Brown Arena, 141 Bayview Rd, Ottawa
Who: Everyone is welcome. No entrance charge
Citizens for Safe Cycling's 2010 annual general meeting will follow at 8 p.m.

Timo’s visit is made possible with the generous help of the Embassy of Finland in Ottawa and of the NDP Member of Parliament for Ottawa-Centre, Paul Dewar.
