How many times did cyclists pass CfSC's two cycling counters in 2010?
10,000? 50,000? 1000,000? 200,000?
The correct count: 656,700 trips – for the first full year of operation of the counters.
The weekly details are charted here (click on the image to get a larger version):
The summer counts for each location are charted here:
CfSC runs automatic trip (CTAP) counters at two sites in Ottawa: on the Ottawa River Pathway and on the Colonel By Pathway. In 2011, three counters will be in service, with the Alexandra Bridge counter coming back on-line.
One more CTAP counter may be added by the end of the year on the Portage Bridge, pending agreement with the NCC. Another three counters are under consideration by the City of Ottawa, pending approval of the segregated bike lane cycling facility on Laurier Avenue, and the rehabilitation of Somerset Street West.
The CTAP program allows Citizens for Safe Cycling to collect detailed data on current cycling trends to pave the way for smart cycling investments for the future. It has been supported by the National Capital Commission, the City of Ottawa and corporate partner TELUS, The first pilot project was installed on the Alexandra Bridge in June 2009, followed by two more counters in 2010.
The CTAP counters can determine average cycling levels along a particular route to within +/-3%. By comparison, once-per-season sampling can only track trends to within +/-50%.
An earlier story on the CTAP program is here.
