With respect to your proposals on cycling my comments are below. I regularly cycle in my neighbourhood and know of some of the sites that you flag as needing improvement. I would be happy to go on a tour to see some of the other problems -- many of which do not seem to be difficult to address. The only hesitation I have about your statement is the specific reference to an east-west route along Albert and Slater. I am not sure whether that is the best choice and I understand that Somerset, Laurier and Gladstone are under study.

Comment:
I am a three-season cyclist (in winter I use a transit pass) and recognize the importance of improving safety and comfort of cyclists. I support the proposals set forth in your nine point program.

In particular, I have long supported a bridge linking the Glebe to Ottawa East and I have encountered several of the top ten issues in my own cycling experience. I would particularly underscore the issue of poor surfaces on the rightmost parts of many routes. I often use Bank Street itself and find that maintenance of the right side of the roadway is more poorly maintained than the central portion of the roadway. Marking hazards with paint and cones is definitely required.

I share your concern about the integration of cycling with current LRT plans. I cannot imagine how a cyclist will use the train eight to ten storeys below street level.

There are circumstances in which I have problems in finding parking for my bike, but I also consider that some bike racks, especially those provided by private property owners, are poorly designed and make it difficult to secure your bicycle.

The cancellation of cycling safety education was a mistake. I cannot directly attribute the numerous tragic cycling accidents to that decision, but over time such effect will emerge.

I am disappointed learn that the Advisory Committee meets only six times a year. If cyclists' input on construction projects is to be obtained, the Advisory Committee should meet on a monthly basis.

Comparison with other cities is needed, not just for cycling issues, but more widely. Only by measurement and facing our deficiencies can we improve.

Thanks for this opportunity to express my support for the work of CfSC and for the broader goal of safer and more pleasant (and just plain more!) cycling in Ottawa.

As many of your members will know, I am a cyclist and cycling advocate. When I show up for all manner of events and meetings carrying my helmet and my panniers or hook-on briefcase, I am not just using the most convenient and liberating form of transportation I know of, I am also trying to make a statement.

Speaking of statements, you can read my full Platform on a number of issues on my website http://ww3.davidc.ca/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=34&Itemid=12, and specifically a section on cycling. http://ww3.davidc.ca/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=43&Itemid=12

Finally, in response to your questions, here are my brief comments (as requested).

Cycling is an important mode of transport for cyclists in Capital Ward, for leisure, commuting or running errands.   Already, 8% of residents in our ward commute by bicycle, four times more than across the city.

An important local problem that needs more attention are the north/south connections, particularly on Main St. and the Bank Street and Billings Bridges.  Having bike lanes installed here will make cycling safer and more attractive as a form of transportation. Also, the far south of the ward (Heron Park) is home to many cyclists or would-be cyclists. I am keen to invest in infrastructure that would make them safer, and feel safer.

I will work with the National Capital Committee and the City of Gatineau to fix the missing links where cyclists cross from one jurisdiction into another, such as along the canal and the river. I support segregated bike lanes wherever possible on our city’s major roads. Many residents don’t feel safe cycling in traffic, so this is the best way to get those people out of their cars and onto their bikes.

I also support increasing funding of taxes to cycling facilities to remove the strain of car congestion.  Capital Ward needs more safe cycling!

I am a candidate for Councillor in Capital Ward. I propose that cycling not be looked at as just a  recreational activity in our planning process, but be integral to our overall Traffic and Transportation  policy, alongside mass transit, buses, roads, bridges, etc.

Cyclists deserve the same safety as any other road user, and they must accordingly obey the rules of the road. Dedicated bicycle lanes as well as a coordinated, cogent network of connected bicycle pathways are integral to this approach, not just in the downtown core, but across the whole National Capital region.

Cycling has many benefits, including reducing automobile use, carbon emissions and parking congestion, as well as increased health benefits and quality of life.

I will push for dedicated bike lanes wherever possible, but of paramount importance is the creation of a safe network that allows our community and all residents of Ottawa to choose cycling as a safe option for commuting and leisure.

My apologies I have not been able to answer, my grandmother has just passed away, my father has given my mother a kidney on Thursday and still remain in intensive care.

I am in support of better safer cycling for all in our city. we need to focus on possible dedicated lanes for cyclists, I bike to work myself and it terrifies my that I may not make it at times. this needs to be seriously addressed. My apologies I have not had time to review your questions.

Thank you for the opportunity to share my views on cycling and what we can do to improve cycling conditions in Ottawa.

I am committed to making Ottawa a safer cycling city. As I canvassed in Capital Ward I have heard from many residents who cycle regularly. It plays a key role in their personal fitness and recreation and reflects their commitment to the environment, and for many residents it is essential transportation to get them to school or work. Residents have also shared with me their concerns about cycling safety. In Capital Ward, we are lucky to be close to NCC paths along the canal and river. However, there are a number of hazards within the Ward and around the city that prevent people from getting on their bikes. From my personal experience and from what I am hearing at the door I strongly believe we must do a better job to make cycling safer in Ottawa. This would respond to the needs of current cyclists and also encourage more people to choose cycling as a mode of transportation and recreation.

Your organization has put forward practical solutions -- some immediate easy fixes and some longer term strategies -- that respond to what I am hearing from residents. As councillor I would want to work closely with Citizens for Safe Cycling to see what we could do jointly in Capital Ward and throughout the city to improve cycling safety and boost the number of cyclists in Ottawa.

Your initiative to take candidates for an escorted ride through their wards is a great way to increase awareness of cycling issues. I would be very pleased to take you up on this and look forward to this opportunity.
