As a councillor, I will support and promote cycling and other alternative modes of transportation; this includes the implementation of the first phase of the city's cycling plan.  If our City is going to develop responsibly, then our\ focus cannot only be on cars and buses.  I will prioritize my support for major cycling projects in the city based upon the demonstrated need to address safety concerns.    

I believe that the Albert and Slater Streets represent the best opportunity for segregated bike lanes across downtown once the first phase of LRT is complete.  This alignment will help with the overall integration of the transit and cycling plans and should including planned additional bicycle parking at LRT stations.

Safe biking and driving practices must be encouraged through regular enforcement of both cyclists and motorists -- both must know and obey the rules of the road.  Education and communication efforts must improve to ensure that residents of Ottawa are aware of the rules relating to cycling.  

While I believe that there are enough meetings of the cycling advisory committee for it to conduct its advisory role effectively, I would support 1-2 additional meetings of this group in a fiscal year that could be added at the discretion of the committee chair.  The committee chair would have to advise the chair of the transportation committee of the decision and communicate the pressing need to hold an additional meeting.   

Within Barrhaven, where there are appropriate opportunities, I will support the integration of bike lanes into our roadway network and the construction of bike paths.  For example, I would like to see that the Jock River have a cycling path for the use and enjoyment of cyclists and pedestrians.  I would like to see the delivery of safe cycling courses offered in Barrhaven in coordination with the recreation department.q
