The 2010 City of Ottawa Bruce Timmermans Awards were presented at a community BBQ celebration May 31.
The Individual Award went to Kathleen Wilker, a founder of a new advocates group called Hintonburg Cycling Champions. As its co-chair, she is spearheading efforts to identify cycling champions in neighbourhood schools, to organize safe cycling events for kids, and to put on a bike parade in Hintonburg.
The award for an organization went for the second time to Pathway Patrol. Since 1997, volunteers have spent thousands of hours keeping Ottawa’s pathways safe and clean. During their patrols, they address pathway users, offering them maps, pamphlets and guidance. They also encourage the wearing of helmets and pathway etiquette.
Bruce Timmermans was a long-time cycling educator and advocate, an active member of the Ottawa Bicycle Club and a founding member of Citizens for Safe Cycling. His legacy lives on through the awards program, created by the City of Ottawa to recognize outstanding individuals and organizations encouraging others to cycle. The program is an important part of Ottawa's TravelWise campaign.
The ceremony took place at a community BBQ celebration, wrapping up the City’s Bike to Work campaign. The silver and black awards are made from bicycle parts. They were designed and crafted by Kunstadt Sport’s long-standing head mechanic, Mike Plummer, who knew Bruce Timmermans since 1975. The event was sponsored by the Bank Street BIA and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. All proceeds from the BBQ will benefit the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association’s Ottawa Helmets on Kids Initiative.
