Andrew has been an invaluable addition to the CfSC family this year. He completed his Can-Bike II in the spring and has successfully completed several Can-Bike courses including Kids Can-Bike and numerous Learn to Ride lessons. In addition to this, he acted as a Bike School instructor for this past summer's Enforcement Blitz. Andrew continues to volunteer for display booths at community events providing people with cycling education on an informal basis.

Thank you Andrew for your commitment to cycling education in Ottawa!

Charles Akben-Marchand  - August 2002 Volunteer of the month

The August 2002 volunteer is Charles Akben-Marchand. Charles has been membership secretary for some years. However, he has recently gone beyond the call of duty in creation of a map listing the location of all of our neighbours. It is now clear where we must concentrate recruitment.

Tom Trottier - July 2002 Volunteer of the month

The July 2002 Volunteer of the Month is Tom Trottier. Tom has provided generous support to keeping our computer system up and running. He was also instrumental with his support addressing the parking issue on the McKenzie King Bridge.

Juergen Weichert - June 2002 Volunteer of the month

Juergen WeichertJuergen contacted CfSC in 2001 to inquire about becoming a cycling instructor. He achieved this status in April 2002 and hasn't looked back.

Juergen has been an exceptional help as a CfSC volunteer ever since. Not only has he volunteered his services as a Kids CAN-BIKE and Learn to Ride instructor, he has offered to develop course curriculae, assembled bicycles for the Shenkman Family Foundation bicycle giveaway, taught Bike School during the Police Enforcement Blitz and has taken the initiative towards getting instructor uniforms.

In his spare time, Juergen likes to build and restore bicycles, in fact he is in the process of building his second recumbent.

His endless efforts to assist and his enthusiasim for all things cycling make him the obvious choice for volunteer of the month for June.Thank you for your dedication Juergen, and keep up the great work!

Jennifer Bookhout - May 2002 Volunteer of the month

Citizens for Safe Cycling is pleased to name Jennifer Bookhout as volunteer of the month for May. Jennifer contacted CfSC in March after seeing our posting at Volunteer Ottawa. She came along at exactly the right time. CfSC was looking to re-design the certificates for the cycling skills courses that we offer. We were sorely lacking in the graphic design department, and Jennifer was looking for an opportunity to help out while debating a career change.

Jennifer lives in Centretown so it was easy for her to drop by the office and say hello. She enthusiastically took on the task of designing the certificates for Kids CAN-BIKE, CAN-BIKE Traffic Skills and for Adult Learn to Ride. If you or your child enrols in one of these courses, you will get to see Jenn's work first hand.

Lisa Routhier - April 2002 Volunteer of the month

Lisa RouthierLisa Routhier came to the CfSC board while doing a project for university on cycling. She has become a core member of the membership committee, concerning herself with recruiting and — in particular — retaining members to the organization.

Lisa can appear as a quiet, shy person - that is just her Clark Kent persona. She is a good planner, a doer with unimpeached follow through and a year round cyclist. Do not even think about cutting her off.

The board would like to thank her for the work she has done in the past, and for the work she continues to do.

"Sir James" Wilson - March 2002 Volunteer of the month

James Wilson

Citizens for Safe Cycling is pleased to name James Wilson as volunteer of the month. James is a long-time member and volunteer with CfSC and other cycling organizations. In the month of March, James worked under a tight-timeframe to reformat our newly updated membership brochure. James used his creativity by employing stunning new fonts, using penny-farthing bicycles as bullets, and even added in some unicycles (around the text in the brochure, "Do you think cycling could be better?").

James added a beautiful watermark of a bicycle in the background, correcting the inaccuracies in the original design of the drawing. James also re-organized the entire brochure so that people can fill out the membership application, tear it off, and still have all the content information of the original brochure. Day by day, with volunteers like James, CfSC gets a little more sophisticated. Our updated brochure is ready for the 2002 cycling season.

Brett Delmage - February 2002 Volunteer of the month

Brett has been the CfSC webmaster since before there was web. Long experienced with computers and computer networks, Brett ran 56K wireless networks when people were impressed with 1200 baud modems.

The webmaster's job is often thankless - you only hear from people when something has broken. The Board wishes to publically thank Brett for his many years of work on the web site.

Melanie Ransom - January 2002 Volunteer of the month

Melanie RansomFor some years CfSC has been trying to get a better handle on how members are recruited, kept track of and retained. The board made several unsuccesful attempts to start a membership committee to spearhead this. A key volunteer was needed to lead the committee.

This person came to us in the form of Melanie Ransom. A former resident of Greater Victoria, Melanie was well experienced with the Greater Victoria Cycling Club and brings much experience to Citizens for Safe Cycling.

Phil Shea - December 2001 Volunteer of the month

Phil SheaThe spring of 2000, CfSC found itself without a newsletter (Chain Mail) editor. Phil Shea asked if there was something he could do to help get a Chain Mail out soon. There was - he could edit it.

Phil didn't know how to use a computer. Had never done any publishing before. But, he desired to help out, so he learned how. Phil demonstrates that enthusiasm is the most important skill for a volunteer.

Ernest Ruppenthal - November 2001 Volunteer of the month

Ernest RuppenthalA new face showed up at the October 18 meeting. A potential board of directors candidate. During that meeting, it became clear that we were able to fill all of the director positions, but we had not found a new treasurer.

The new face volunteered for that position. Once elected, he spent between 3 and 5 hours a week learning to run the accounting program, arguing with the bank and communicating with Revenue Canada. His spouse and he negotiated childcare so that he could visit the CfSC office regularly so that the books would not fall behind. As far as the former treasurer can tell, everything is fine. No news is good news when it comes to accounting.

The board would like to thank Ernest Ruppenthal for the amount of effort and enthusiasm he has shown and continues to show. Ernest Ruppenthal is the November volunteer of the month.

"Sir James" Wilson - October 2001 Volunteer of the month

James WilsonJames Wilson is a familiar face to many in the cycling community. He has been a volunteer with CfSC for many years. This month James is recognized for his significant contribution to Better Bicycling deliveries.

James was single handedly responsible for the delivery of 2000 copies of the Fall 2001 issue-the most of any volunteer, almost 15% of the total papers published!

James made most of his deliveries outside his own neighborhood, traveling to wherever needed: Ottawa's South end, Orleans and Vanier - the eastern areas we have tried so valiantly to cover with limited success before now.

Karl Mills - March 2001 Volunteer of the month

Karl MillsKarl Mills is a cyclist who responded to "the call" again in 2001 as he did before, and by doing so has made a difference for cycling in Ottawa.

As a former member of the Cumberland Cycling Advisory Committee, Karl worked with others to improve cycling in the far east end of the urban area, and near east end of the rural area of the Region of Ottawa-Carleton. The Committee ended several years ago, and with it, his first round of involvement although he remained a long-time CfSC member and graduated from the CAN-BIKE II cycling skills course.

All former municipal cycling advisory committees also ended on December 31, 2001, the last day that their parent cities existed. On January 1, 2001 the new City of Ottawa was established. But it had no citizens' cycling advisory committee. One was not expected to be established for another six months if ever.

Russell McOrmond - February 2001 Volunteer of the month

Russell McOrmondRussell McOrmond is one of those volunteers whose contribution is, in a way, invisible. The better he does it the more transparent it becomes. Yet, if he did not take his contribution seriously, thousands of cycling residents could notice it each day. Communications could be disrupted and activists with urgent discussions would gnash their teeth, unable to talk. Electronic vandals could run amok and tarnish CfSC's public image.

What volunteer contribution could have such an impact and yet be almost invisible? The Flora Community WEB webmaster, network and systems administrator, of course!

Michael Richardson - January 2001 Volunteer of the month

Michael RichardsonAt the end of the year, when most cyclists are busy with thoughts of holidays and perhaps some time off work, there is always one CfSC volunteer who has some important work that must be done as the year closes. In fact, this task represents one small part of a series of many tasks that must be done throughout the year, always promptly and reliably, or bad things will almost certainly happen. And accuracy counts! Every transaction must be done with precision or else will be found to be wrong. Unlike almost all other volunteer jobs, the work done by this volunteer is checked by an independent party once a year, and scrutinized by the Board of Directors monthly.

We are, of course, referring to the work of the CfSC Treasurer. It's a volunteer position that Michael Richardson has been doing well for 3 years. As 2000 drew to an end and other CfSC volunteers were taking a bit of a breather, Michael was busy wrapping up financial transactions for the year and preparing financial final statements for the financial reviewers: not only for one set of books, but for 3! While keeping 3 sets of books is normally something one would try to hide, it's everyday work for Michael, who has maintained separate ledgers for Advocacy and Member Services, the Cycling Safety and Promotion Program, and Bruce Timmermans Trust accounts since he started.

"Sir James" Wilson - October 2000 Volunteer of the month

James WilsonJim "Sir James" Wilson is a volunteer who's a joy to work with. He's dependable and hard-working, and always gives you the feeling he's enjoying helping out.

Sir James has been awarded the October award for volunteer of the month specifically for his work in checking out the 100 kilometre route for the "Tour of the City Halls" 2000 Harvest Ride. He rode that route twice: first to check it out several days before the ride, and then led the 100 km riders the day of the ride. He also went out of his way to pick up some of the prizes for riders.

But that's not all he's done for CfSC: he's also helped with distribution of Better Bicycling and provided photographs for the "You're never to old to cycle" pamphlet to encourage cycling for mature adults.

But probably his biggest achievement is in running in the Canadian Kilometre Achievement Program (CKAP) for many years effectively single-handedly. This program encourages cyclists to improve and increase the amount they cycle, and every year recognizes cyclists who have accumulated many thousands of kilometres (both annually and lifetime). Without Jim, the program wouldn't now exist, and we would have lost another tool for getting people out on the bikes more.

Agnes Davis - September 2000 Volunteer of the month

Agnes DavisAgnes Davis is a member of a cycling family, including husband Bill and son Paul, who have been enthusiastically promoting cycling in the Ottawa area for a decade. This month CfSC is pleased to recognize Agnes Davis for her many personal contributions as a CfSC volunteer.

Throughout this year Agnes has been a valuable volunteer in the Cycling Safety and Promotion program. One of the core volunteers who have brought Better Bicycling to tens of thousands of local residents, Agnes has helped both put this newspaper together and then deliver it where readers could pick it up. She wrote "A motivator for cycling" about the value of a cycling log, and stimulated an article from a car-free family. Earlier this year Agnes was a member of a small team that put together CfSC's first and highly popular book on cycling for mature adults. She provided both photographs and text for the publication and critically reviewed drafts of the booklet before it went to press.

Brett Delmage - August 2000 Volunteer of the month

In July and August of 2000 our membership secretary went on a well deserved trip. Unfortunately, like all trips, there are too many things to do before one leaves, and the magic info for making the CfSC membership database was not passed on.

Brett Delmage, a computer whiz of unusual patience, took it upon himself to figure out how to get into the insides of the membership database. This involved wandering down many twisty little microsoft access passages, all alike.

He did this in the middle of a beautiful summer, when cyclists should be out - cycling.

If not this, we wouldn't know who you are, and would not be reading this. The board nominated him on August 30th as Volunteer of the Month for August 2000.

Alayne McGregor -  July 2000 Volunteer of the month

Alayne McGregorAlayne has spent numerous hours attending Ottawa Transition Board meetings, reading agendas and following up on minutes. She has been a key author of the combined new Cycling Advisory Group Terms of Reference that was presented to staff.

Thank you Alayne.

John Stevenson - March 2000 Volunteer of the month

John StevensonThe CfSC newsletter, Chain Mail, is eagerly received by CfSC members several times each year. Without the work of John Stevenson, it wouldn't arrive.

Last year John took on responsibility for getting members' newsletters from the printer to the mailbox. While this sounds straight-forward, there are many details, all which have to be done correctly for a successful mailing. The correct amount of postage, which frequently varies from issue to issue, must be obtained -- or Canada Post promptly returns the newsletters with the postage cancelled. Different inserts including membership cards, renewal notices, return envelopes, special notices, and maps.

This is normally enough work for a crew of volunteers, which John has ably coordinated. But recently when enough volunteers could not be found due to a late changing mailout schedule of the newsletter, John took it personally upon himself to ensure that Chain Mail was promptly processed and mailed to members.

Frances Tanner - February 2000 Volunteer of the month

Frances TannerIt's hard to remember everything Frances Tanner has done for CfSC, because her talents and her efforts are so wide-ranging. Should we start with her term as vice-president and other years on the board where her common sense and strong links to the community helped ensure good decisions? Or should we remember her willingness to do the even the most mundane work of keeping the organization together -- like using her weight-trained muscles to move our overloaded filing cabinets in our last office move.

We have to mention Frances' most recent contribution: she wrote two excellent profiles for the latest issue of the CfSC newsletter, Chain Mail, of Robin Bennett and Geoff Noxon. They were interesting, accurate, and arrived on time -- a godsend for a beleaguered newsletter editor.

Frances comes through in a pinch. When the CfSC Safety and Promotion program desperately needed someone to take over women's workshops at Nortel last summer because of a change in personnel, Frances came through, and got great reviews from the participants.

Ewen Todd - January 2000 Volunteer of the month

Ewen ToddEwen Todd leads by example as one of the region's most dedicated cyclists. On all but the snowiest and iciest days of the year he can be seen riding to work at Tunney's Pasture where he works as a senior scientist, from his home 10 km away. He hasn't been afraid to hop on his bike in his suit and tie to get to an important business meeting, to set an example for others of the practicality of bicycle transportation.

For two years Ewen has served as CfSC's financial reviewer. He recently gave his "stamp of approval" to CfSC's financial statements after a meticulous review. He brings with him the experience of treasurer in the Research Scientist Group of the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC). Ewen even helped to debug a small but mysterious glitch in the numbers. Ewen's signature on the financial statements is solid reassurance to CfSC members and funders that the statements accurately represent CfSC's financial transactions. While financial review is a largely unglamourous and invisible task, it's also demanding and essential. Without it CfSC could not obtain extensive funding to promote bicycle use and cycling safety.

Phil Shea - August 1999 Volunteer of the month

Phil Shea

Thankfully, Phil Shea is a cycling volunteer who just won't give up! No doubt his years of experience as a high school teacher and long distance cycle tourist have helped develop his persistence. That's great news for Ottawa area and especially Kanata cyclists, who are benefiting from years of Phil's work as a cycling volunteer.

During the past seven years, Phil has made a variety of contributions to cycling. As past president and current Tour Director, he has helped organize and run the Kanata Nepean Bicycle Club (KNBC), a family-oriented bicycle touring and social club in the west end of our region. As an active resident of his Kanata community, Phil was a member of the Kanata Cycling Advisory Committee during its first term. There he helped develop the city's cycling network plan and identify other local improvements for cycling.

Kate Reekie - November 1998 Volunteer of the month

Kate ReekieKate Reekie is so full of energy that she was selected as the Volunteer of the month only two months after she became a CfSC volunteer and a welcome addition to the CfSC Board of Directors.

In a short time, Kate had arranged an excellent speaker for CfSC's Annual General Meeting, and all the details of the annual potluck dinner which precedes the AGM. The dinner and the speaker were both greatly enjoyed by those who attended. Kate took care of many of the invisible but important details that made the event a success, including thanking the speaker with a gift and follow-up letter, and taking minutes of the business meeting. There was little rest for her!

Kate volunteered to be CfSC Secretary when nobody else came forward. She has done extensive work to consolidate many of CfSC's policies that were buried in old Board meeting minutes and therefore hard to find and apply.

Kate continued to be a very active Board member. We encourage you to express your thanks by offering her your help for one of the many interesting CfSC projects that she is leading. We know that you will enjoy working with her as much as we have.

Thank you, Kate!

Peter Schmolka - October 1998 Volunteer of the month

Peter Schmolka (right) receives a volunteer T-shirt at the 1998 CfSC Annual General Meeting
Peter (right) receives a volunteer T-shirt at the 1998 CfSC Annual General Meeting

Peter Schmolka is one of CfSC's volunteers who does truly invaluable work "behind the scenes" and without much public profile or credit. Although he has done much writing for us his name has never appeared on any his work. Yet his work is always of professional quality, from the training and experience that he brings to the task. Peter has been CfSC's "number 1" translator for several years.

Peter has responded to our last-minute pleas, not with justified complaints, but by translating our request in short order to make up for our lack of planning. His work has helped CfSC communicate with, assist, and make new connections with the 40 percent of our french-speaking regional population that we have not communicated with effectively before. In October 1998 Peter completed a major task which will help CfSC to grow, the translation of our new membership brochure.

For all of his very special contributions we are pleased to acknowledge Peter Schmolka as our October 1998 Volunteer of the Month.

Thank you Peter! Merci Peter!

Fred Perel - September 1998 Volunteer of the month

Fred PerelTo use Fred's own words, "Cycling is my passion!" Fred's passion was demonstrated on September 20, 1998 with the successful launch of the Harvest Ride. As CfSC's Division Leader, Fred led this first joint fundraising event between the National Capital FreeNet (NCF) and Citizens for Safe Cycling. The Harvest Ride raised more than $600 to support CfSC's Advocacy, cycling education and promotion work. Participants were delighted with the tours and the after-ride lunch and awards ceremony that Fred's and NCF's teams put together.

In addition to fundraising and outreach Fred has also actively participated in cycling advocacy and educational projects. In the fall of 1997, Fred spoke with enthusiasm and energy to Nepean City Council about the importance of promoting and supporting bicycle transportation to Nortel's expanding Carling campus. He has actively participated in rallies to preserve municipal government funding for cycling. Rounding all of this out, Fred has been a keen promoter and organizer of CfSC's Kids CAN-BIKE Festivals and a volunteer for a variety of less glamourous but essential Cycling Safety and Promotion Program activities.

Fred has expressed his passion for cycling in not just words, but also in very meaningful and concrete ways, to the benefit of all area cyclists. Thank you, Fred, for sharing your passion.

Lorin Gaertner - July 1998 Volunteer of the month

Lorin GaertnerLorin's Ottawa cycling roots go a long way back. He grew up in Gloucester and has been cycling for as long as he can remember. Recently he has started winter cycling too! He first heard about CfSC several years ago from another long time member, Ewen Todd. Lorin came on full speed as a volunteer this year, starting out by helping with the mail out of our newsletter, Chain Mail.

He has helped with every issue so far this year. Since then he has helped with the Champlain Bridge project by distributing a survey to cyclists using the bridge in July, and has volunteered with information booths held along the Western Parkway during the Sunday parkway closures.

Sadly, love is taking Lorin away from Ottawa; his girl friend is at school in Texas and this fall he leaves Ottawa to join her there. Good luck with everything Lorin, and keep on cycling in the Wild West.

Wally Beaton - June 1998 Volunteer of the month

Wally BeatonWally has been a member of CfSC for four years. He joined the legion of active CfSC volunteers by running for the Board of Directors in 1997. Unfortunately, personal commitments obliged him to step down in early 1998. Nevertheless, since then, he has taken on several volunteer projects. Wally organized the Board minutes into a complete and accurate record. He also organized information and membership booths held along the Ottawa River Parkway during the Sunday parkway closures. Currently Wally is serving as the CfSC rep on the Regional Light Rail Task Force.

Graydon Patterson - April 1998 Volunteer of the month

Graydon PattersonIf you peek into any number of cycling committee meetings throughout the year where a lot of the work to improve cycling in Ottawa-Carleton actually takes place you'll frequently find Graydon Patterson actively contributing. He has been a reliable participant in the planning committees for the City of Ottawa and Regional cycling networks, constantly contributing new ideas and challenging other committee members to make progress; not an easy task at times.

During the annual planning for CfSC's Cycling Safety and Promotion Program this winter, Graydon was a valuable and active participant. He brought his skills as an analyst for the Ottawa-Carleton Regional Police Service to bear on a complex and extensive program evaluation, and design and prioritization of the 1998 work plan. He used his skills and access to tools to produce a number of professional-quality structure charts to assist committee members with their understanding of program objectives and work areas.

"Graydon always amazes us with his thoughtful analysis and fresh ideas to problems. If Graydon's on a project, you know it's moving forward, says CfSC's Cycling Safety and Promotion Program Coordinator.

Bruce Lowe - September 1997 Volunteer of the month,

Bruce LoweIn an emergency situation you soon discover who the diehard cycling supporters are - the ones who will drop everything to spend a day doing what has to be done to improve cycling in the region. Bruce is one of those people. In June we were given with very little time to defend $500,000 COIW funds for improvng regional roads for cycling. Bruce spent the better part of a day tagging every cyclist's bike in the downtown area he could find - 800 of them - to let evryone know what was happening and how they could help. Thanks in large part to Bruce's efforts, about 50 cyclists showed up at Regional Headquarters for the "Rally for Cycling" before the vote and 200 letters supporting the cycling initiative were sent to regional councillors!

Bruce is no stranger to anyone in the region who is into bikes. Part-time bike racer and Ottawa Bicycle Club (OBC) Racing Director, he has been an

active volunteer in all aspects of cycling for years. Bruce has had a hand in quite a few CfSC safety promotions in the past, including being the evil car driver cutting off Christine Jenkins on her bike for a series of motorist awareness clips on CJOH news.

On May 17 of this year Bruce finally tied the knot with partner and CfSC member, Kathleen Dugas. Congratulations, Bruce and Kathleen!

Nathalie Connor - May 1997 Volunteer of the month

Nathalie ConnorA change has come over the Cycling Promotion and Safety office. The brochures and instructors' packages are neatly stacked, ready to go. Resources are organized. Volunteers are stuffing envelopes while Gavin MacPhail and Pierre Bourgeois plot schools strategy in the other. An up-to-date white board shows critical dates and how we're going to get there.

What happened? No, it wasn't Mr. Clean. It was Ms. Nathalie Connor, who has put in an average of 30 hours a week at the office since an innocent phone call about bicycle paths in early March. "She phoned me the day before one of those pathway patrol meetings wanting to ask about making users more responsible on paths," relates Coordinator Gavin MacPhail. "I invited her, she showed up and just was able to take over."

When Nathalie reported back on the pathways meeting, she asked, "How else can I help?" Oh... "Let me count the ways!" said Gavin. "Since then, she's made an unmanageable workload manageable, especially in the administration and the CAN-BIKE program. And she has done a great job of coordinating the other volunteers: she's a meat-volunteer!"

Bill Davis - February 1997 Volunteer of the month,

Bill DavisBill Davis has been an active CfSC volunteer for more than four years, as just one member of the very active Davis family. His wife Agnes and son Paul are also dedicated CfSC volunteers.

You may have already met Bill as one of the smiling faces behind CfSC's booths or public events, including BIKE Weeks and last year's Ride for Cycling registration desk. CfSC members have always been able to depend on Bill's help, even on short notice, for the important behind-the-scenes work that keeps things running smoothly.

Most recently and more officially, Bill has been a driving force on the Ottawa Cycling Advisory Group. As chair of its Comprehensive Cycling Plan Implementation Subcommittee, Bill has been as exacting as the committee name sounds! His committee meets with Ottawa Engineering and Works staff, including Alternative Transportation Planner Daphne Hope, twice a month, sets priorities and reviews progress on cycling network improvements. "Bill is responsible for encouraging several new OCAG members to become involved with the work of the subcommittee," says Daphne. "He is always ready to participate in site visits to further the work on various projects. He is not stinting in the time committed to this work, for I frequently arrive at the office on Monday morning to find telephone messages left by Bill on Saturday or Sunday!"
