An open letter to cyclists about cycling skills training

April 17, 2009

Dear Cyclist,

Citizens for Safe Cycling (CfSC) ran these program on a contract with the City of Ottawa until 2006, following which they were delivered by Envirocentre in 2007 and 2008. So far, the City has no Cycling Education Program or Cycling Safety & Promotion Program for 2009, and the entire department was disassembled in the recent restructuring of City Hall. We have yet to see what form the transportation department will take once restructuring is complete.

CfSC is very disappointed that the City has dropped the ball, as currently there is no program to help people like yourself. This is an embarrassment considering the Ottawa Cycling Plan was approved in July 2008. Please contact your City Councillor to demand that these programs be reinstated immediately.

There is one individual instructor who may be able to help you with courses:

Following the discontinuation of the City contract for this program in 2007, Citizens for Safe Cycling is now 100% volunteer driven, with revenues coming 100% from membership dues and donations--just as it was before we took on these programs in 1992. Our efforts focus on advocacy to represent cyclists in order to get better conditions for cyclists and a greater emphasis at the government level on cycling as a mode of transportation.

Our message is driven by our members, and our message is stronger every time a new person decides to join. We encourage you to join Citizens for Safe Cycling to help in this effort and to remain informed about cycling issues in Ottawa.

Thank you for your interest in making Ottawa a better place to cycle.

Sincerely,
Citizens for Safe Cycling (CfSC)
