Cycling residents celebrate opening of new 3.5 km bike path on abandoned CP rail line today
For immediate release: Monday June 17, 1996
One of the region's most interesting, environmentally-friendly projects constructed under the Canada-Ontario Infrastructure Works Program has just been completed and will officially open today. The new 3.5 km stonedust bike path, which runs on the abandoned rail line from Bells Corners to Kanata and will eventually connect to Stittsville provides an important link in the region's transportation system for cycling residents. It will eventually be used for as many as 840 cycling trips each day.
"This new path is a welcome addition to the regional cycling transportation network," said Citizens for Safe Cycling President Brett Delmage, who uses the new path in his 20-km daily commute from near the Civic Hospital to his job Kanata South Business Park. "The new route is a very pleasant alternative to Robertson Road that shortens my trip to work by 5 minutes. Instead of being deafened by cars speeding by me half a metre away at 90 km/h I now enjoy seeing deer and listening to birds on my way to work. This is the type of positive and inexpensive solution to neighbourhood traffic problems and air pollution that the Regional Transportation Department should be supporting instead of attempting to kill."
The official opening ceremony will take place at 7:00 p.m. this evening where the path meets Eagleson Road.
