CfSC says "Stick it to the Oil Companies - Don't Buy Gas at All!"

For immediate release: July 8, 1999

Ottawa, Ontario - In response to the recent 10¢ jump in gasoline prices, Citizens for Safe Cycling suggests that consumers don't buy gasoline at all. Instead, people can use bicycles, their feet and public transit to get around.

Not only will consumers save by not paying exorbitant prices for fuel, but extra money will seem to appear from unspent parking and repair costs. Over the long run, consumers can also keep thousands of their hard-earned dollars by not purchasing car insurance. In fact, the average motorist can save roughly $7,000 a year by not driving a car.

Ryan Lanyon, Safety and Promotion Program Coordinator for Citizens for Safe Cycling encourages drivers to abandon the pumps. "Instead of paying hefty prices for gas, send oil and fuel companies the ultimate message - don't buy their products at all! Someone spending $20 a week on gas can save enough to pay for a brand new bicycle in just two months."

Commuters worried about longer distances can now bring their bicycles on Route 97 buses across the Region. Panniers, baskets, backpacks and bicycle trailers can also be used for transporting goods and children.
