Citizens for Safe Cycling Volunteers Reward Good Behaviour during Road Safety Challenge Week

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 7, 2001

The Road Safety Challenge is taking place from May 6 through May 13. Community partners are working hard to promote safe use of our roads. This year's theme is "Share the Road, Share the Responsibility".

CfSC will participate in the Road Safety Challenge by rewarding responsible cyclists with a commendation package, consisting of a Cycling Map of Ottawa, a coupon for a free pizza slice, OC Transpo Rack & Roll information, and a CfSC membership brochure. "This year's Road Safety Challenge theme illustrates that all road users must be accountable for their actions. We feel that it's important for cyclists to have positive reinforcement of appropriate behaviours," says Jennifer Allen, CfSC's Safety and Promotion Program Coordinator. "We need to focus on the positive, and take time to thank those cyclists who are setting the right example for others".

Volunteers will distribute the commendation packages throughout the week, all across the city. Attention will be paid to those cyclists who are cycling on the road as opposed to the sidewalk, cyclists who observe and obey traffic signs and lights, as well as those who are using proper lighting and reflective materials for evening and night time riding.

For information on how cyclists and motorists can safely share the road, contact Citizens for Safe Cycling at 567-1288 or visit our web site at http://www.cfsc.ottawa.on.ca
